A prominent Federal Government agency is seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join their National Geodesy Section. This is a rare opportunity to modernise scientific software systems and uplift Australia’s national geodetic and gravity modelling capabilities. The successful Senior Software Engineer will work across critical programs supporting foundational geospatial infrastructure used by government, research, and industry. The Senior Software Engineer will be offered an initial 4-month contract with 2 x 4-month extensions, with hybrid arrangements

The successful Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for, but not limited to:

• Modernising geodetic and gravity modelling tools by updating legacy dependencies, improving security, and enhancing maintainability across platforms such as AWS, NCI, Linux and Windows
• Introducing automated unit and integration testing frameworks to ensure numerical accuracy, reproducible outputs and platform consistency
• Uplifting existing gravity gridding and geoid modelling code into robust automated pipelines for national-scale operational model production
• Producing clear and standardised documentation, including onboarding notes, developer guides, and operational runbooks

To be successful, the Senior Software Engineer will demonstrate:

• Experience modernising scientific Python/C++ codebases, including refactoring, dependency upgrades, vectorisation, multithreading and use of scientific libraries such as NumPy/SciPy
• Capability in running scientific workflows across AWS and NCI, with strong cross-platform build skills (CMake/Make, pip packaging)
• Proven ability to convert research-style scripts into scalable operational pipelines with logging, configuration management, retries and error handling
• Strong communication and documentation skills, producing clear user and developer documentation for ongoing support and handover
