We are seeking an experienced Lead User Researcher to join a high-performing Federal Government Agency at the forefront of digital service delivery. This role plays a critical part in shaping user-centred, accessible and effective government digital services that support millions of Australians.

The Lead User Researcher will provide specialist expertise across complex digital platforms, leading research activities to deeply understand user needs and behaviours, and translating insights into actionable recommendations that improve service design and delivery. This opportunity offers an initial 12-month contract, multiple extension options, hybrid working arrangements, and the chance to work on high-impact, nationally significant digital initiatives.

The Lead User Researcher will be responsible for but not limited to:

  • Leading and delivering end-to-end qualitative and quantitative user research across complex digital services
  • Designing, planning and facilitating research and usability testing with diverse and vulnerable audiences
  • Organising research logistics including participant recruitment, incentives, venues and vendor management
  • Analysing, documenting and synthesising research findings into clear insights and recommendations
  • Leading user-centred design and co-design activities

The successful candidate will have experience in the following:

  • Demonstrated expertise in user-centred design across complex web journeys
  • Proven ability to lead, design and analyse a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research methods
  • Strong proficiency in industry-standard research tools (e.g. tree testing, card sorting, surveys, first-click testing)
  • Excellent analytical and data interpretation skills
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Experience working within agile or multidisciplinary delivery environments

Qualifications & desirable experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience conducting user research in complex digital environments
  • Experience working on large-scale or high-traffic websites (highly desirable)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to remain resilient and effective in fast-paced, high-pressure environments
